Description The Reality Most QA roles are about writing scripts to catch bugs after the code is written. This isn't one of those roles. At VAST Data, we aren't just scaling software; we are building the fundamental engine that powers the global AI revolution. When you are managing exabytes of data at breaking-point speeds, traditional testing methodologies crumble. We don't need someone to follow a test plan. We need an architect to build a self-evolving, intelligent testing ecosystem. The Mission We want you to build the AI tools that validate our AI data platform. You will design autonomous, agentic systems that actively look for vulnerabilities, orchestrate their own testing logic, navigate distributed dependencies, and isolate regressions entirely on their own before they hit production. If you are a systems-level builder who gets excited by complex distributed systems, autonomous logic, and breaking things at an elite engineering scale, this is your playground. Requirements What You’ll Actually Do Everyday • Build AI Agents for Quality: Design and deploy production-grade Python frameworks and LLM-driven agentic tools that dynamically generate, execute, and self-correct test environments. • Orchestrate Chaos at Scale: Move past static assertions. You’ll build runtime verification tools that stress-test data integrity, multi-node failures, and deep storage engine behaviors. • Ditch the Manual Mindset: Drive our entire automation architecture toward a state where human intervention is the exception, not the rule. • Partner with Core R&D: Work side-by-side with our systems architects to inject intelligent code evaluation pipelines right into our fast-moving CI/CD engines. What You Bring to the Table • A Builder's Mindset: You consider yourself a software engineer first, who happens to apply their skills to infrastructure reliability and complex validation. • Python Mastery: You don't just use automation tools; you build them. You write clean, scalable, object-oriented code that other engineers love to read. • Distributed Systems Context: You understand the unique pain points of Linux kernels, multi-tenant networking layers, containerization (Docker/K8s), and data pipeline architectures. • AI Curiosity: You have hands-on experience or deep curiosity regarding LLMs, prompt pipelines, and modern AI developer environments.

Description VAST Data is looking for a Senior AI Engineer to design and build production-grade, LLM-powered systems. You'll work at the intersection of software engineering and applied AI — shipping agents, RAG pipelines, and tool-using systems that solve real problems at scale. This is a hands-on, high-ownership role for someone who thrives at the frontier of what's possible with modern LLMs and isn't afraid to write the glue, the infrastructure, and the prompts that make it all work. This is a **cross-functional, company-wide role**. You won't be embedded in a single product team — instead, you'll partner with every department to identify high-leverage opportunities and build AI-powered tools and workflows that boost productivity and efficiency across the entire organization. This is a great opportunity to be part of one of the fastest-growing infrastructure companies in history, an organization that is in the center of the hurricane being created by the revolution in artificial intelligence. "VAST's data management vision is the future of the market."- Forbes VAST Data is the data platform company for the AI era. We are building the enterprise software infrastructure to capture, catalog, refine, enrich, and protect massive datasets and make them available for real-time data analysis and AI training and inference. Our success has been built through intense innovation, a customer-first mentality and a team of fearless VASTronauts who leverage their skills & experiences to make real market impact. This is an opportunity to be a key contributor at a pivotal time in our company’s growth and at a pivotal point in computing history. What You'll Do: - Design, build, and operate LLM-powered applications, agents, and workflows end-to-end — from prototype to production. - Architect retrieval, context engineering, and tool-use strategies that make models reliable, accurate, and cost-efficient. - Integrate LLMs with internal services, third-party APIs, and data stores to automate complex business and engineering workflows. - Build, evaluate, and continuously improve evaluation harnesses for non-deterministic systems. - Collaborate closely with product, research, and platform teams to translate ambiguous problems into shipped capabilities. - Stay ahead of the rapidly evolving LLM ecosystem (models, frameworks, agentic patterns) and bring the best ideas into our stack. Requirements Engineering Foundations: - Strong Python skills- you write clean, idiomatic, well-tested code and understand the language deeply. - Hands-on experience using coding agents(Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar) to build complex software systems. You know how to delegate effectively to AI assistants and review their output critically. - Experience with multiple database paradigms- both SQL (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB, Redis, DynamoDB, or similar). You can choose the right tool for the job. - Experience designing and integrating with third-party APIs- REST and gRPC. Comfortable building robust clients, handling auth, retries, rate limits, and schema evolution. - Production experience with Docker and Kubernetes- containerizing services, writing manifests, and debugging deployments. - Strong Linux fundamentals- confident in bash and the terminal; you can navigate, script, and troubleshoot a server without reaching for a GUI. - Experience building cloud-native tools on AWS, GCP, or Azure (compute, storage, queues, serverless, IAM). AI / LLM Expertise: - Solid understanding of what an LLM is and how it works- tokenization, attention, context windows, sampling, and the practical implications of each for system design. - Strong grasp of modern patterns for integrating LLMs into real workflows, including RAG, MCP (Model Context Protocol), vector databases, agents, tool use, and context engineering- with hands-on experience building with several of them. - Production experience implementing LLM-powered systems end-to-end, using relevant tools and frameworks (e.g. LangChain, LlamaIndex, LangGraph, Haystack, Pydantic AI, vector stores like Pinecone/Weaviate/pgvector, observability tools like LangSmith or Langfuse). - Solid foundation in core ML concepts; embeddings, evaluation, overfitting, generalization, and how classical ML relates to and differs from modern LLM-based approaches. Nice to Have: - Experience fine-tuning or distilling open-source models. - Contributions to open-source AI/ML projects. - Experience with streaming, real-time systems, or low-latency inference. - Familiarity with prompt evaluation frameworks and LLM-as-judge methodologies. - Background in distributed systems or high-scale backend engineering. What We Look For: - A builder's mindset; you ship, measure, iterate, and don't get stuck in analysis. - Comfort with ambiguity; LLM systems are non-deterministic and the field moves weekly. You navigate that with curiosity rather than frustration. - Strong communication; you can explain trade-offs to engineers, product managers, and executives alike. - Pragmatism; you know when to reach for a 200-line script and when to invest in proper infrastructure.

You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including product management, engineering, and customer success to create exceptional user experiences that meet our customers' needs and enhance their interactions with VAST. What you'll do • Break down intricate B2B workflows into intuitive, end-to-end user journeys, from overwhelming configuration to guided, logical steps users can complete confidently. • Design in Figma within a mature design system, tokens, components, and variants. Keeping work aligned with shared patterns, not one-off screens. • Build and iterate interactive prototypes(including AI-assisted tools such as Cursor) to validate flows, states, and edge cases before and after engineering handoff. • Work closely with engineering throughout the lifecycle, including technical discovery, design reviews, implementation QA, and post-ship iteration, at every level from implementation detail to architectural constraints. • Apply product thinking, frame problems around user and business outcomes, prioritize ruthlessly, and connect design decisions to adoption, support burden, and roadmap impact. • Own projects end-to-end— problem framing, information architecture, interaction design, microcopy collaboration, developer-ready specs, and design QA through implementation. • Collaborate as a team and operate independently. Lead your own workstreams while partnering daily with the design team, engineering, and other architects. Requirements Requirements • 5+ years designing software products (B2B/enterprise strongly preferred), with a portfolio showing. Complex applications not only marketing sites or B2C. • Strong product thinking, you ask about goals, success metrics, and tradeoffs before jumping to UI. • Expert in Figma. Components, variants, auto-layout, variables/tokens, library hygiene. • Proven track record partnering closely with engineering at all levels, comfortable in technical conversations about feasibility, constraints, and implementation quality. • Comfort building or contributing to usage, adoption, and support reports to inform prioritization and design decisions. • Self-directed and resilient in a fast-paced environment. Able to take a feature from ambiguity to shipped design, manage parallel initiatives, and deliver under tight turnarounds. • Excellent written and verbal communication. Clear specs, constructive critique, microcopy abilities, and effective advocacy for users and design quality. Preferred • Experience with data infrastructure, storage, networking, cloud, or DevOps products. • Comfort with design tokens and component-based design systems at scale. • Experience with metrics-heavy UIs, charts, time series, operational dashboards. • Familiarity with agile delivery and design QA in continuous release cycles. • Active use of AI in the design workflow, exploration, audits, prototyping. Portfolio should show • At least 2 complex enterprise workflows. (wizards, configuration, admin consoles). • Product reasoning: problem, constraints, tradeoffs, and what changed based on evidence. • Collaboration with engineering, such as iteration after implementation feedback or specs that reflect technical reality. • Bonus: research or metrics that shaped a design decision.
